iPhone is a smartphone manufactured by Apple that uses Apple's iOS mobile operating system. The first generation of the iPhone was announced on January 9, 2007 by the then CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs. Since then, Apple has released new iPhone models and iOS updates every year. As of November 1, 2018, more than 2.2 billion iPhones had been sold. The iPhone was the first mobile phone to use multi-touch technology. Since the introduction of the iPhone, it has gained larger screens, video recording, water resistance and many accessibility features. Until the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhones had a single button on the front panel, while the iPhone 5s and later included a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Since the iPhone X, iPhone models have moved to a near-bezel-less front display design, Face ID instead of Touch ID for authentication, and greater use of gestures instead of the Home button for navigation. Touch ID and the Home button are still used on low-end iPhone SE models. Along with Android, the iPhone is one of the two largest smartphone platforms in the world. The first generation iPhone was described as a 'revolution' for the mobile phone industry. The iPhone is credited with popularizing smartphones and tablets and creating a large market for smartphone apps, or the 'app economy'. As of August 2024, there were nearly 2 million apps in Apple's App Store.
